These Terms of Use apply to PrivaLog on iPhone, iPad, Mac, and the web.
PrivaLog is a personal, encrypted journal. By creating an account or using PrivaLog, you agree to these terms.
For apps distributed through the App Store, Apple’s standard End User License Agreement also applies. These terms supplement that agreement.
You need a PrivaLog account to synchronize your journal and use the web version.
You are responsible for protecting your account password, securing your email account and devices, all activity through your account, and reporting suspected misuse.
Your account is personal. A Pro subscription is linked to one PrivaLog account.
Your account password and journal passphrase serve different purposes. Your account password is used to sign in. Your journal passphrase is used to unlock your encrypted journal.
Your passphrase is not sent to the server in readable form. PrivaLog cannot view, reset, retrieve, or recover it.
If you forget your passphrase and no longer have access to a device on which your journal can still be unlocked, PrivaLog cannot recover your journal. Store your passphrase carefully.
Your journal content is encrypted on your device before it is sent to the server for synchronization.
PrivaLog cannot view the readable content of your journal. Limited metadata, such as the date and technical timestamps of an entry, may be stored on the server.
Encryption does not protect against someone who has access to an unlocked device, an open journal, your passphrase, or a readable export. You remain responsible for securing your devices, accounts, passphrase, and export files.
New users may receive a 14-day trial. The trial starts when the journal is successfully unlocked for the first time. Reinstalling the app or signing in again does not start a new trial.
After the trial, you can continue using PrivaLog for free. On Free, you can keep writing locally in the native apps, your journal remains encrypted, new and updated entries are not uploaded to the cloud, and the web version is largely read-only. Previously synchronized data remains readable while your account exists.
Pro includes encrypted cloud storage, synchronization between supported devices, and writing through the web version. The current Free and Pro features are shown in the app.
PrivaLog Pro is offered as an automatically renewing monthly or annual subscription.
The exact price, currency, subscription period, and any trial terms are shown in the app and in Apple’s purchase screen before you buy. The price displayed by Apple is the final price.
PrivaLog may initially be offered at approximately €2.99 per month or €24 per year. Prices may differ by country and App Store region.
Apple processes purchases and payments. PrivaLog does not receive your full payment card or bank details.
A Pro subscription renews automatically until you cancel it through your Apple account.
You can manage your subscription in Apple’s subscription settings. Deleting the app, your PrivaLog account, or local journal data does not automatically cancel an Apple subscription.
Cancellation normally takes effect at the end of the current paid subscription period. Apple’s terms apply to payments, refunds, and cancellation.
When your trial or Pro subscription ends, existing encrypted cloud data remains stored while your account exists. You can continue reading previously synchronized data and writing locally in the native apps.
Uploading new or changed data to the cloud is blocked, and the web version becomes largely read-only. Local changes may therefore differ from the most recent cloud version.
An encrypted export contains ciphertext and is not a readable copy of your journal. It can only be used within the same account and journal. It cannot be restored into a new account, even with the same email address, account password, and passphrase.
A readable JSON export contains your journal content as plain text. It may be imported into an unlocked journal where that feature is available. Store readable exports securely; they are not protected by PrivaLog’s journal encryption.
PDF and Markdown exports contain readable content and are intended for reading or storage outside PrivaLog. They cannot be imported as a complete recovery file.
You choose where exports are stored. PrivaLog does not automatically delete them when you sign out, delete the app, or delete your account.
You can delete your account through Settings → Delete Account.
After confirmation, your account’s server data is deleted. PrivaLog cannot then restore your account or cloud data.
Local exports and other files you saved remain until you delete them yourself. Deleting your account does not automatically cancel an active Apple subscription. Create a readable export first if needed.
You retain all rights to the content you write in PrivaLog.
You give PrivaLog only the limited permission technically required to store and synchronize encrypted data and provide the service. PrivaLog does not become the owner of your journal content.
We aim to provide PrivaLog carefully and reliably, but we cannot guarantee that it will always be available without errors, delays, or interruptions.
PrivaLog may be changed to fix errors, improve security, add or modify features, or comply with laws and platform requirements. We will try to communicate significant changes appropriately.
You are responsible for safely storing your passphrase, securing your devices and accounts, checking that synchronization works as expected, and creating and safely storing suitable exports.
To the extent permitted by law, PrivaLog is not liable for loss arising because you forgot your passphrase, lost access to an unlocked device, local changes were not uploaded, you deleted an account or export, an external service was temporarily unavailable, or someone accessed an unlocked device or readable export.
Nothing in this section limits rights or liability that cannot be excluded under mandatory consumer law.
PrivaLog’s Privacy Policy applies to the processing of personal data:
PrivaLog is not intended for children under 16.
These terms may be updated when PrivaLog, subscription options, service providers, or applicable rules change. The date at the top shows when these terms were last updated.
These terms are governed by Dutch law. This choice of law does not limit any mandatory consumer rights you have under the laws of the country where you normally live.
